AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
Second Skin FAQs
What is Second Skin?
- Second Skin is a breathable, adhesive barrier that protects your tattoo during its most vulnerable healing stages.
- It locks in your body's natural fluids to aid healing while keeping out dirt, bacteria, and contaminants.
How Long to Keep It On
- Leave the Second Skin bandage on for 3-4 days after your session.
- If it comes loose, leaks, or lifts early, remove it immediately and follow AFTER REMOVAL instructions below.
Water & Showering
- Second Skin is water-resistant, not waterproof — light showers are okay.
- Avoid soaking, swimming, or hot tubs while the bandage is on.
- If water gets under the bandage, remove it as soon as possible to prevent infection.
When & How to Remove
- Remove gently in the shower using warm water to help loosen the adhesive.
- Pull slowly in the direction of your skin — not away from it — using slow, steady movements.
- Do not reapply Second Skin once it has been removed or comes off early.
After Removal
- Wash the tattoo gently with liquid, fragrance-free antibacterial soap.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel, or let air dry completely.
- Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion 2–3 times per day to keep the area moisturized. I recommend Aquaphor, Lubriderm, A&D ointment, or coconut oil.
- Avoid petroleum-based products, excessive rubbing, or scratching.
What's Normal
- Plasma, blood, or excess ink pooling under the bandage
- Slight redness or pressure marks around the edges
- Peeling or flaking skin as the tattoo heals
What to Avoid
- Picking, peeling, or scratching the bandage or tattoo
- Direct sunlight or tanning beds on the healing tattoo
- Tight clothing rubbing on the tattooed area
Reactions & Concerns
- If you experience excessive redness, itching, rash, or blisters, remove the bandage immediately and consult your healthcare provider.
- If you have had prior reactions to adhesives, please communicate this before your next session.
Long-Term Care
- Once fully healed, continue moisturizing regularly to keep your skin healthy.
- Always apply broad-spectrum SPF to your tattoo to preserve color and detail.
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure — it is the number one cause of tattoo fading.
